Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? (“Who Watches the Watchers”)
They’re watching, but who’s watching them?…
And who’s watching them, watching them, watching?…
And who’s watching them, watching them, watching them, watching them?…
Everybody’s watching. Somebody’s watching. Nobody’s watching.
Somebody’s watching, everybody watching.
Nobody’s watching, somebody’s watching.
Nobody’s watching, everybody watching.
MIB… Men in Black. The Somebody, Watching Everybody watching…
But Nobody is Watching Somebody, Watching Everybody
Do you see what I’m getting at?
As my man George Orwell said, “Big Brother is watching you.” So let’s give ‘em something to watch.
“Space flights are merely an escape, a fleeing away from oneself, because it is easier to go to Mars or to the moon than it is to penetrate one’s own being” ~ Carl Jung
What reminds you the most of home? Maybe it’s smell? Anybody by chance, know what Mars smells like?
The fact is that once you leave home, often there is no going back. It is funny how far the heart drifts in the great expanse. You gotta be that rollin’ stone and put on that smilin’ face. Like the Joker said, “Why so serious?” Speaking of which where did I put my happy face pin? I think I lost mine in the theaters watching the Watchmen.
Ralph’s happy face emblazoned on his suit, I envisioned as a kind of an overly optimistic and happy A.I. that always puts a positive spin on any dire event in a hostile universe. I was thinking along the lines of a high-tech version of Wilson from the movie Cast Away. Pardon me on my third popular movie reference, but I still got one more for y’ah.
They say Forest Gump invented the smiley face or so Robert Zemeckis would have you believe, but it is totally intergalactic and yes, I just threw that out there. Come to think of it, Carl Jung must have totally taken over a small corner of my brain since he also said something about explaining the “symbol” (i.e. retro smiley face) as if you were a man from Mars.
Hope you like the new sketch. I drew it back at my old home. It kept me company on a real late night contemplating how things are never the same and yet there’s no place like home. Ohmmmmmmm…… why don’t you meditate on a little Bob Dylan now……
E.T. Phone Home:
You still here? Bless your heart! I’ve been thinking about tweeting or putting out facebook status updates with little iPhone snap shots of process work. I was even meaning to put this up to tease this post. Here’s the test and don’t forget to connect with me on twitter @SimianZ for future peaks of Martians and otherwise.
It’s lonely out there drifting in deep space at least until your remember to embrace the void.
Here is another one of those alien concept sketches I promised I had laying around my apartment. This one in particular is based off of the majestic creature the Manta Ray.
For those of you who have been visiting the site, you know me as the artist, the illustrator, the doodler but I am also a trained scuba diver. Surprised? Nah, not you guys.
The year I graduated high school my family and I went to Micronesia on a trip organized by the bad ass Rusty Berry over at Scuba Schools of America. One of the our stops was at the Island of Yap. The dive there was one of the most memorable dives I have ever had. Not deepest, but I got to see a group of Manta Ray.
We were told we might not see anything. . . maybe one or two. I remember sitting with my dive group on the ocean floor waiting for something, anything in the slightly murky waters. Finally, like a ghost emerging from the fog was this giant Manta Ray.
The first thing I thought was wow, this must be what it’s like to see a ufo or some alien being. The next thing I knew there was another one and another one. Finally, there were six huge Manta Rays swimming around us and that was one of the fucking coolest things I have ever seen.
I can’t help but tell this story when I show you this drawing. I searched the internet for some video to give you a taste of that amazing experience, but I kept finding stupid Discovery Channel narrated crap.
Here is a unfortunately short clip of some cool manta rays with some chill music.
Also, below is the Beastie Boys song Intergalactic in honor of the post. Get ready to soak in the Intergalactic Rays.
Well can you believe it? A rhino alien. Who would of thought of that? You guessed it: Jay mutha f#@%in Zuck. I guess its not the most creative thing in the world to take an animal, make it a little humanoid and put some antenna on it, but the kids like it. So what do you think? Crazy enough? Ain’t it cool how you can put antenna on anything an all of a sudden you can call it an alien?
This sketch and yesterday’s sketch were actually ideas I was playing with when I was conceptualizing First Contact with some Mean Bitches. I finally came up with a Fat Doughy like alien in my post Aliens do Exist: The Truth is Out There. From there, the story for Mean Bitches started to develop in my mind. I think I have a few other developmental sketches lying around so if you’re lucky I’ll post them if I deem them post worthy.
It occurs to me that last week I boldly proclaimed, “Rhinos are cool… nuff said.” Well, I guess my pencil had some more cool things to say on the topic.
Anyway, I’ve been on break from school and been taking it easy for the most part. School starts Monday, which is exciting. I’ve got some cool classes which is a good thing for the site. In the coming weeks, I’ll definitely show you whats been going on. I will continue to post my work as often as I can. It’s still called Jay Zuck’s Sketch of the Day and I plan to keep this thing going like the well oiled machine that it is. So keep your peepers peepin’ while the days roll by at Jay Zuck’s Sketch of the day.
“We have been warned by the Hebrew, American Indian, Aztec and Hindu prophets that, at the ‘End of Days,’ we will encounter Dragons, Leviathans and serpent-gods. They shall, we are told, arrive as the harbingers of terror, death, redemption and salvation. From where they will come is a question that has eluded the finest of scholarly minds that study the prophesies. One thing we do know, however, and that is that they are here, on and in EARTH.” ~ Dragons of the Apocalypse by John Rhodes

Did I draw it or are you Hallucinating? I guess it all depends….
I remember when I drew this more than few years back. Art school was tough and while I was learning a lot, I didn’t feel like I was creating art anymore.
Art for me was always a deeply personal reflection and by various teachers preventing me, from being me, it sometimes felt as if I was losing myself along with my art. I knew going in that art school was all about tearing you down before it built you back up, but sometimes it felt that nothing was good enough.
And so late one night as I was contemplating my predicament in art and life, I scribbled. And I scribbled. And I scribbled some more.
Being a little bit out there was nothing new to me. It was who I was. Infuse that with a little anger and frustration and a desperate need to create something which bodly stated: this is who I am!
I remember bringing this into class and showing it to my teacher in the hope he might get a glimpse inside my head. He didn’t really have very much to say. I don’t know if it was because he didn’t much like it or just didn’t care, but one thing I can tell you is that I like this piece. I am showing it to you because it is a reminder of who I am and who I used to be.
I have come along way since then. I have found the happy middle ground between my personal sense of style and structured, composed, and focused art. No harm in looking back though.
Every time I look at this it feels like time travel: a hallucination of years past which has the power to transport my entire state of mind. Thanks for following me back in time. Tomorrow we will go back to the future. Great Scott!
On monday I was collecting data and today I have the final layout sketch to show off. I don’t have much to add to the prior post except I think I may have figured out what those girls are all about (see title).

You might say that an artist is a natural observer collecting data on the subject he chooses to study. It is not too dissimilar from the extraterrestrial passively hovering above us. Perhaps, this is part of where my fascination with aliens comes from and maybe this entire first paragraph is a total load of crap.
This layout is a rough draft for something new I am working on. It is at least another pass away from being anywhere near complete, but I thought it was cool enough to be displayed while in process. A few tweaks messing with the levels, color, hue, and saturation, created a kind of purple haze which I thought was kind of cool for the moment.
The sketch depicts a couple of aliens studying and taking notes on a group of girls. The group is anchored by a cluster of “mean girls”: popular, remote, and sexy as hell. The “mean girls” have been picking on the little geeky girl closest to the alien on the left. They have scattered her papers and she is attempting to collect them. Of course, the aliens have been there the whole time to observe the human social hierarchy at its worst.
The most prominent girl (second from the right) is the alpha. Her second in command (the girl to the alpha’s immediate right) stands contemptuously at the indignity of being so closely and obviously scrutinized by the alien visitors. It is kind of look at me don’t look at me kind of thing. Finally, the girls to the right of the alpha girl are more pretenders and hangers on.
I designed the alien character and posted him as a sketch of the day not too long ago. I am really excited about giving this another go and showing off a cleaned up version soon. I may still have a bit more data to collect myself, but I am well on my way.
