Well, what can I say…I’m having fun with these. More to come. In the mean time, roll dem’ bones. Viva Las Vegas.

Here’s another one of my Lizard People conceptual studies for my Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas creature design. I don’t feel this really fullfills the insane qualities of Fear and Loathing I’m looking for, but I still found it post worthy.
This sketch really should be called Lizard People Sketch #1 because it was my first attempt at creating a Lizard Person (sorry for the confusion). It still needs some more of that Gonzo craziness. I tried to accomplish that more so in yesterday’s sketch where I gave the lizard man crazy eyes where there are no real pupils but only spirals. Yesterday’s sketch was also bigger and meaner; well maybe not mean enough. These lizards got to be bat shit insane. Still, I thought you guys might appreciate my explorations of the character.
I’ve got some more of these Vegas Lizard People explorations to show you (some drawn and others still percolating in my head), so keep your eyes open. That’s something I feel I left out of the last two character designs: Hitchhiker and Dr. Gonzo. Not that I don’t have those somewhere lying around my apartment, so there still may be some time to post those before I finish sketching my way through this HST universe. So let me know what you think. Don’t be shy and leave a post.
Well if you got this far and managed to read all of today’s post I present to you a tiny thumbnail design of something in between today’s and yesterdays post. Its not much but it gets the idea across and you get to see a little of the thought process that goes on around here. Thanks for checking it out.

“Terrible things were happening all around us. Right next to me a huge reptile was gnawing on a woman’s neck, the carpet was blood-soaked sponge impossible to walk on, no footing at all. ‘Order some golf shoes,’ I whispered. ‘Otherwise, we’ll never get out of this place alive.’” ~ Hunter S. Thompson
When Dr. Gonzo and Raoul Duke get to Vegas tripping on acid and find their way in the hotel bar, they are confronted with an orgy of lizard people feasting on an unsuspecting public.
My creature design today is one conceptual sketch of the lizard people in a series of possibilities I am experimenting with in my ongoing Fear and Loathing series. The animated and loosely gonzo-style universe continues to unfold…

“Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear!” ~ Moby Dick, Herman Melville
Here is another one of those alien concept sketches I promised I had laying around my apartment. This one in particular is based off of the majestic creature the Manta Ray.
For those of you who have been visiting the site, you know me as the artist, the illustrator, the doodler but I am also a trained scuba diver. Surprised? Nah, not you guys.
The year I graduated high school my family and I went to Micronesia on a trip organized by the bad ass Rusty Berry over at Scuba Schools of America. One of the our stops was at the Island of Yap. The dive there was one of the most memorable dives I have ever had. Not deepest, but I got to see a group of Manta Ray.
We were told we might not see anything. . . maybe one or two. I remember sitting with my dive group on the ocean floor waiting for something, anything in the slightly murky waters. Finally, like a ghost emerging from the fog was this giant Manta Ray.
The first thing I thought was wow, this must be what it’s like to see a ufo or some alien being. The next thing I knew there was another one and another one. Finally, there were six huge Manta Rays swimming around us and that was one of the fucking coolest things I have ever seen.
I can’t help but tell this story when I show you this drawing. I searched the internet for some video to give you a taste of that amazing experience, but I kept finding stupid Discovery Channel narrated crap.
Here is a unfortunately short clip of some cool manta rays with some chill music.
Also, below is the Beastie Boys song Intergalactic in honor of the post. Get ready to soak in the Intergalactic Rays.
“Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe.” ~ Anatole France
This Wandering Beast is one of many ancient spirits on which some of my character design has seemed to meditate. While the Wandering Beast is inspecting the children’s tree house in his realm, the children come out to play on his back and find themselves that much closer to the highest clouds to which their imagination aspires to reach.
This creature was in part inspired by the great Hayao Miyazaki and in particular the Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke.
Like the Forest Spirit, my Wandering Beast is inextricably linked to the natural world. He represents a pillar of the natural order and a connection to the true spirit and essence of the universe.

On monday I was collecting data and today I have the final layout sketch to show off. I don’t have much to add to the prior post except I think I may have figured out what those girls are all about (see title).

You might say that an artist is a natural observer collecting data on the subject he chooses to study. It is not too dissimilar from the extraterrestrial passively hovering above us. Perhaps, this is part of where my fascination with aliens comes from and maybe this entire first paragraph is a total load of crap.
This layout is a rough draft for something new I am working on. It is at least another pass away from being anywhere near complete, but I thought it was cool enough to be displayed while in process. A few tweaks messing with the levels, color, hue, and saturation, created a kind of purple haze which I thought was kind of cool for the moment.
The sketch depicts a couple of aliens studying and taking notes on a group of girls. The group is anchored by a cluster of “mean girls”: popular, remote, and sexy as hell. The “mean girls” have been picking on the little geeky girl closest to the alien on the left. They have scattered her papers and she is attempting to collect them. Of course, the aliens have been there the whole time to observe the human social hierarchy at its worst.
The most prominent girl (second from the right) is the alpha. Her second in command (the girl to the alpha’s immediate right) stands contemptuously at the indignity of being so closely and obviously scrutinized by the alien visitors. It is kind of look at me don’t look at me kind of thing. Finally, the girls to the right of the alpha girl are more pretenders and hangers on.
I designed the alien character and posted him as a sketch of the day not too long ago. I am really excited about giving this another go and showing off a cleaned up version soon. I may still have a bit more data to collect myself, but I am well on my way.
